If ‘Assault Weapons’ Are Bad…Why Does DHS Want to Buy 7,000 of Them for ‘Personal Defense’?

How funny. A REAL assault rifle–ie. one with “automatic fire”–is called a “personal defense weapon” by the Obama administration…

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” PDW — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.Citing a General Service Administration GSA request for proposal RFP, Steve McGough of reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.

Obama firing military leaders who say they will not shoot fellow Americans?

Go read this article:

Dr. Garrow is not known for being a wild crackpot or part of the political fringe, so when he recently made the following post on his Facebook page, it got the attention of a number people:

“I have just been informed by a former senior military leader that Obama is using a new ‘litmus test’ in determining who will stay and who must go in his military leaders. Get ready to explode folks. ‘The new litmus test of leadership in the military is if they will fire on US citizens or not.’ Those who will not are being removed.”

The ‘40 Percent’ Myth – John Lott – National Review Online

Obama is lying and he knows it about the claim that up to 40% of guns are obtained without a background check. This absurd claim comes from ONE study in the Clinton years of 251 people. For a number of reasons, the people did not even know if they had purchased from a federal firearm license dealer. But, considering all the problems with the study, here are the bottom line numbers:

If you include these transfers either through FFLs or from family members, the remaining transfers falls to 11.5 percent.

We don’t know the precise number today, but it is hard to believe that it is above single digits.

Yet, what we need to look at are the costs of pushing background checks into private sales and transfers.

We have to realize that the current system of background checks suffers from many flaws, some causing dangerous delays for people who suddenly need a gun for self-defense, such as a woman being stalked by an ex. In addition to crashes in the computers doing the checks, 8 percent of background checks are not accomplished within two hours, with almost all of these delays taking three days or longer.

Obama made many other false statements during his talk. He asserted that “over the last 14 years [background checks] kept 1.5 million of the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun.” But these were only “initial denials,” not people prevented from buying guns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms dropped over 94 percent of those “initial denials” after just preliminary reviews. Virtually all the remaining cases were dropped after further investigation by ATF field offices or the Department of Justice. Few of these “initial denials,” 62 people or about 0.1 percent, involved strong enough evidence to be consideration for prosecution. Just 13 pleaded guilty or were convicted.

Wow. What a wonderful analysis and review.

If anyone was wondering what would happen if the policies of our government get too out of control, this book does not pull any punches. Cameron does a marvelous job at painting a picture of a not-so-distant future where our rights are under attack, not only by shady politicians, but by an apathetic citizenry.

What I really like about this book is the character development. Just when you think the story is going one way, a thoughtful character takes it in another direction. It isnt just a good vs. evil tale. This story unravels the way morality is shifting today and the thoughts that drive it. Is the world getting better under a new socialist regime? Can a few brave men and women rescue what is left of the Constitution?

You dont have to be George Orwell to see what is going on in the world today, and this book is an interesting take on what could, or what is happening today. Gun owners will enjoy Camerons knowledge of the law, as well as his appreciation of our gun culture. I have to say that I learned a few things by reading this book about guns, history, and the law.

Enemies of the Constitution will probably be gobbling Rolaids halfway through this book. The exposing of their thought process is revealed through good storytelling and researchable truth. If you are ready for a good story, with some intense action, and are willing to think, this is the perfect book for your library.

I do feel I must offer a warning for language and a steamy situation that occurs in the story. I thought these could have been written around or in different ways, but thats just me, speaking as a Christian.

Cameron is a great storyteller with a love for his characters. I hope to see more books in the future!

Las Vegas Ads Targeting Gay People — and denigrating Straight Couples

Amazing… Hope and Change.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the official destination marketing arm of Las Vegas and the surrounding area, has launched a new campaign aimed at targeting gays and lesbians. The associated ads, created by R&R Partnersand featuring attractive same-sex couples enjoying themselves in the city, poke fun at heterosexuals who are repeatedly depicted as frumpy and old school.

So now the PC police are going to deem as inappropriate the nose art on WWII aircraft?

You gotta be kidding…

The most wide-ranging category covered 27,598 “inappropriate/offensive” items. It included sexually suggestive posters in public areas, obscene cartoons and more than 200 images of aircraft nose art, some dating to World War II. Air Force Special Operations command removed several examples found in the interior of its aircraft.

MILLER: Tax dollars for gun control – Washington Times

This is a good analysis of why we DON’T want the government doing “research” on guns…

The directives on gun violence President Obama signed Wednesday were meant to seem harmless. A closer look at the president’s first memorandum reveals it to be a sneaky assault on congressional authority in order to fund gun-control propaganda.

… Mr. Obama is trying to steamroll the Democratic and Republican majorities that kept the ban intact by labeling the advocacy as research… Under the terms of the memo, CDC may “sponsor” another entity to conduct the research, which is a handy way of funneling taxpayer cash to sympathetic gun-control groups.

… Congress clamped down on the spending after President Clinton used the CDC and National Institutes of Health to create material advancing his theme of treating gun ownership as a public health issue, rather than a constitutional right. Millions in taxpayer funds were blown on junk science, such as $2.6 million used to determine if teenagers who are shot are more likely to have been drinking and carrying a gun…

Biden says Administration Doesnt Have Time to Prosecute People Who Lie on Background Checks

Is it a gun grab or is it an actual concern about keeping guns away from bad guys?

You decide:

Vice-President Biden said, “And to your point, Mr. Baker, regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply dont have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately.”

via NRA-ILA | Biden says Administration Doesnt Have Time to Prosecute People Who Lie on Background Checks.

For your information, the Form 4473 is what prospective gun buyers have to fill out as part of the NICS program, which is the National Instant Crime Check System.

In 2011, for example, out of 72,600 NICS denials, the feds prosecuted only 62 cases. Now, while it is true that the vast majority of denials are what are called “false positive” results, the paucity of prosecutions reflects an ambivalence toward enforcing existing laws.

So, when bad guys are right there for the taking… Obama instead wants to restrict  the law-abiding from owning and using the guns they prefer.

Another tome on Right-Wing extremism…

So this is a but unnerving. I’ve written about the demonization of the tea party and other “right-wing extremists” at American Thinker in “Wargaming Tea Party Extremists.”

Now we have a full blown analysis of right-wing violence… I’m reading through this 146 page analysis and will write about it in some detail as soon as I can.

For now, the intro:

In the last few years, and especially since 2007, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attacks and violent plots originating from individuals and groups who self-identify with the far-right of American politics. These incidents cause many to wonder whether these are isolated attacks, an increasing trend, part of increasing societal violence, or attributable to some other condition. To date, however, there has been limited systematic documentation and analysis of incidents of American domestic violence.

With all the gun debate business, it’s good to recall how leftists tried to brainwash us with bogus statistics. This is an excellent piece by my friend and law school classmate, Dave Kopel.

Perhaps the most enduring factoid of the gun prohibition movement is that a person with a gun in the home is 43 times as likely to shoot someone in the family as to shoot a criminal. This “43 times” figure is the all-time favorite factoid of the gun-prohibition lobby. It’s not really true, but it does tell us a lot about the gun-prohibition mindset.

The source of the 43-to-1 ratio is a study of firearm deaths in Seattle homes, conducted by doctors Arthur L. Kellermann and Donald T. Reay (“Protection or Peril?: An Analysis of Firearm-Related Deaths in the Home,” New England Journal of Medicine, 1986). Kellerman and Reay totaled up the numbers of firearms murders, suicides, and fatal accidents, and then compared that number to the number of firearm deaths that were classified as justifiable homicides. The ratio of murder, suicide, and accidental death to the justifiable homicides was 43 to 1.

This is what the anti-gun lobbies call “scientific” proof that people (except government employees and security guards) should not have guns.

Of the gun deaths in the home, the vast majority are suicides. In the 43-to-1 figure, suicides account for nearly all the 43 unjustifiable deaths.

Counting a gun suicide as part of the increased risk of having a gun in the home is appropriate only if the presence of a gun facilitates a “successful” suicide that would not otherwise occur. But most research suggests that guns do not cause suicide….

Global warming catches fire – Washington Times

The unintended consequences if inane federal regulations:

Technologies advanced as the solution to the purported global warming problem are catching fire — just not in the way intended. Bureaucrats are quickly learning that their regulatory offerings designed to entreat Mother Nature into bestowing cooler temperatures upon the planet have created environmental hazards of their own.

It’s well-known that the fluorescent light bulbs being foisted on a reluctant public spread deadly mercury when dropped. In March, the administration will be free to enforce a federally imposed ban on the manufacturing of warm, pleasing and affordable 100-watt light bulbs. This will force more highly toxic substances into millions of American homes.

Another hazard is being created for automobiles sold in Europe — and eventually in the United States.

Several German automakers, including BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen, have expressed skepticism toward a European Union mandate telling the firms that their in-car air-conditioning systems must be more environmentally friendly. In particular, they are being pushed into deploying a more politically correct refrigerant known as R-1234yf, which regulators insist is perfectly safe.

Daimler, maker of Mercedes-Benz sedans, raised the alarm when the firm’s own testing revealed the substance increases the risk of vehicle fires. “In the new real-life test scenario, the refrigerant is dynamically dispersed at high pressure near to hot components of the test vehicle’s exhaust system,” the company explained in a statement last year. “This corresponds to a serious head-on collision, in which the refrigerant line is severed and the reproducible results demonstrate that refrigerant, which is otherwise difficult to ignite under laboratory conditions can indeed prove to be flammable in a hot engine compartment.”

A dramatic video of the test procedure shows the underside of a car using the new coolant bursting into flames under conditions that do not ignite the refrigerant in use today. The danger of combustible air-conditioning systems won’t be limited to the Continent. Our own Environmental Protection Agency is offering automakers substantial credit toward their Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) obligations, which can save big money for companies in the midst of a weak economy, if they convert to more flammable systems.

Government loves nothing more than tossing taxpayer money onto bonfires. In 2009, the administration offered a half-billion-dollar loan to Fisker Automotive to underwrite the production of the $100,000 hybrid-electric luxury automobiles that are beloved in Hollywood. Sixteen of these politically correct vehicles happened to be waiting at Port Newark, N.J., in October when Hurricane Sandy hit. After floodwaters receded, the waterlogged Fisker Karmas burst into flame and burned to the ground. The tendency toward self-immolation was significant enough that it sparked a series of recalls last year.

Instead of worrying about imaginary future cataclysms, regulators ought to consider the real environmental and economic damage their policies create. The left’s favorite trendy technologies, from squiggly light bulbs to electric cars, simply aren’t ready for prime time. The government needs to extinguish its desire to meddle before more harm is done.

A Canadian’s Version of David Letterman’s Top 10

Thanks to Tom Mullane. Original author unknown.

Canadian’s Version of David Letterman’s Top 10

1) Only in America, could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund-raising event.

2) Only in America, could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President, a black Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal workforce is black while only 12% of the population is black.

3) Only in America, could they have had the two people most responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Department and Charles Rangel who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

4) Only in America, can they have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that Muslims might be harmed by the backlash.

5) Only in America, would they make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege while discussing letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just ‘magically’ become American citizens.

6) Only in America, could the people who believe in balancing the budget and sticking by the country’s Constitution be thought of as “extremists.”

7) Only in America, could you need to present a driver’s license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.

8) Only in America, could people demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company (Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes (Nike).

9) Only in America, could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a trillion dollars more than it has per year – for total spending of $7 million PER MINUTE, and complain that it doesn’t have nearly enough money.

10) Only in America, could the rich people – who pay 86% of all income taxes – be accused of not paying their “fair share” by people who don’t pay any income taxes at all.

Articles like this show that the premiss of my novel is NOT too far fetched. Scary stuff, indeed. And a thanks to Bill Woosley for this!

Thousands of people in several Argentine cities ransacked supermarkets for a second day in the latest challenge to President Chistina Kirchner, who is struggling to revive a weak economy…  In the central city Rosario, two people were killed during the incidents and 137 people arrested.

Washington’s Republicans and Democrats alike have become the toll collectors on the road to serfdom–

“The violence puts Mrs. Kirchner in a difficult position as the poor are [her] core constituents…  Her government spends billions of dollars a year to help low income families, including free health care…  [Yet] Argentine activists who claim to represent the poor traditionally block access to supermarkets in the month of December to demand free food and other items…  The latest events were some of the worst acts of looting and vandalism in years….  Local media showed dozens of men, women, and children hauling away televisions, refrigerators, and food.”

Some have said my warnings about a coming civil war between makers and takers are exaggerated.  It’s true that Argentina’s politicians have been waging class warfare since Juan and Eva Peron–and they aren’t fazed when it turns bloody. Obama and the Democrats are relative newcomers to the game.  But Argentina reveals who really suffers when those who create a nation’s wealth get mugged by those who spend it–as just happened this week in Washington.
